I chuckle as I write this title, “Barb’s Swamp Shrooms”. It sounds really weird doesn’t it? Well here is a little backstory on where I tried “Barb’s Swamp Shrooms” and why I am typing up this delicious recipe for all to try.
Back in November, I went deer hunting with my brother and dad at our local property. Property that has been in my family for generations, we spend a lot of time there not just during hunting season though. My brother, dad and I, really look forward to our time together during hunting season. There are times when we spend more time “shooting the sh*t” then we do hunting!
In true Wisconsin fashion, we pack up the guns for the day and head down to the local tavern to watch the Packer Game on a Sunday afternoon. Yes we sacrifice shooting a GIANT buck to watch some football and toss back a few cold beverages. Honestly, I think most Wisconsinites do this!
We headed to a local tavern, LaCannes Swamp Lake Resort, formerly known as Fuzzy & Nancy’s on Swamp Lake. Swamp Lake has been around for many generations. Fuzzy and Nancy sold it a few years back and the bar got a total facelift, it looks really great! Plus, they have a really great bartender, Dusty! Pay her a visit and tell her I sent you! Lol
Anyways, to the point of “Barb’s Swamp Shrooms”. We showed up for the game and found out they were having a pot luck, a few people brought in some food for all to enjoy! There was this crockpot of mushrooms, ALL mushrooms! It was buttery and delicious, like nothing I have ever tasted before. Then, I, found the lady who made these delicious mushrooms and asked how she made them.
Now, the funny part to all of this, I don’t remember if her name was actually Barb!
Barb’s Swamp Shrooms were so great, I decided to give my try at them and make them for Thanksgiving. In true Megan fashion, I tweaked the recipe some to make it my own! They were a hit, if you like mushrooms ! If textures are hard for you, I would say this is probably not a recipe for you. Barb’s Swamp Shrooms is a very affordable snack. You can freeze the leftovers and use them on steaks! These were so good on Thanksgiving and a lot of friends and family missed out. so I have decided I am making them for Christmas Eve this year.
List of 4 Ingredients
- Minced Garlic
- Italian Dressing Packets
These go together so easy! If you bought whole mushrooms, slice them into smaller pieces, not too small as they cook down. In a large pot, melt down your butter and add in your mushrooms, minced garlic and Italian Dressing packets. Mix everything together, making sure the mushrooms are well coated, sauteeing for only a couple minutes.
Turn the crockpot on low for 4 hours, stirring occasionally. You will not need to add any liquids, the mushrooms will add plenty.
*If it seems dry, add some more butter to the crockpot*
You have to give credit, where credit is due, thanks Barb!! Below is a typed up recipe with measurement’s and times. Give this hors d’oeuvre a try and let me know what everyone thinks of them! Seriously, they’re the BEST!
Again, pay a visit to LaCannes Swamp Lake Resort if you are ever in the Tomahawk, WI area! They’re right off the four wheeler and snowmobile trail! Check them out!!
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year,
Barb’s Swamp Shrooms
- 1 8 Quart Crockpot
- 10 8oz White Mushrooms Whole or Pre-Sliced
- 3 Italian Dressing Packets
- 3 Sticks Unsalted Butter
- 2 tbsp Minced Garlic
- If you bought whole mushrooms, slice them into smaller pieces. Not too small as mushrooms do cook down some.
- Toss your mushrooms, minced garlic, Italian Dressing packets and some butter into a pan, sautéing until your mushrooms are well coated in butter and seasoning. Move mushrooms to your crockpot and set on low for 4 hours.
- DO NOT add any liquids. Mushrooms will add their own liquid along with the butter.
- You can toss these right into the crockpot without the pan first. They may just take a little bit longer.
- Omit the garlic if you like, still just as delicious without!
