Fried Green Tomatoes

First off, if you have never seen the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, this is your cue to do just that. I watched the movie for the first time in High School and for a few years after I wanted to try making, said Fried Green Tomatoes. I have tried them a few different ways on the Blackstone, but I didn’t like how they cooked.
I just want to start off with saying, these don’t taste like a tomato. I honestly can’t even explain the taste, but definitely not a tomato. Its almost a sweeter flavor.
I am a little late to the game in making these this year, as most tomatoes have ripened. But my favorite family at the Farmers Market had a ton of green tomatoes on Saturday, so I thought I would try making them one last time this year. I had full intentions of making them earlier in the year, but it just didn’t work out, but it finally did this time.
Also. I have found that strictly green only tomatoes work the best. If the tomatoes are already starting to ripen, they get too mushy. When they’re green, they are a little more stiff and tend to cook and taste the best.

Below I will have a step by step on how I make these. There are a ton of recipes out there, but this is what I used. I hope you give this a try, this year if you come across some green tomatoes, or save this recipe for next years crop.

What Do I Need?

  • Green Tomatoes
  • Flour
  • Milk
  • Eggs
  • Bread Crumbs
  • Cornmeal
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Cast Iron or Deep Pan

Step 1:

Cut your tomatoes into 1/4″ slices. You don’t want them too thin or too thick, just the perfect amount so they fry nicely.
Once those are sliced, put on a plate, with paper towel underneath and on top of the tomatoes. This is to soak up any moisture from the tomatoes, so the batter sticks to the tomato.
Let tomatoes sit for a few minutes until moisture is soaked up.

Step 2:

Get your batter bowls ready. Line them up in the way you are going to use them. And get your oil ready. Once you oil is sizzling you are ready to start frying your green tomatoes.

Step 3:

This step is quick and easy, fry your tomatoes. Dip your tomatoes in the flour, milk & egg mixture and than the bread crumbs & cornmeal mixture and place into the pan.
Fry the tomatoes until the batter is golden brown. Usually a minute or two, not too long. Must ensure your oil is hot too, so the tomatoes don’t get mushy.

And there you have it, the famous Fried Green Tomatoes. I hope you enjoyed these and shared them with some of your friends. There are something that is worth only getting a short time out of the year.
