Lets just get right to it, I love a good tasty Gyro! Ever since I was a kid there was always this double decker red bus that came to town during the holidays that had the BEST Gyro’s! Ask anyone from my home town, they would say the same. The line was so long it crossed the street, the bus would show up a week before the holiday because us locals loved them SO much! They truly were out of this world! Unfortunately, the owner got ill and they no longer make their debut in town but they are greatly missed!
I have tried plenty of times to find a Gyro that was similar to theirs. There have been a couple of close ones that I have tried. When I met my boyfriend, he had never really had one and he was a bit skeptical about lamb meat so he always went with Chicken. Until one day, he ventured over to the lamb and hasn’t looked back since.
Making these at home was his idea, he said he has been craving one and he also said “These would be really good to put on the blog”. SO here we are, typing up this delicious at home Traditional Lamb Gyro recipe for you to try! From here down there will be some small step-by-step photos, followed up with the full recipe. Check it out!
Here is a quick list of ingredients you need and what I used. You can use whatever kind of meat you prefer, we chose Lamb.
Ingredients
- Ground Lamb Meat – Or sliced chicken / Ground beef
- Minced Garlic
- Pita Bread
- Onions
- Tomatoes
- Tzatziki Sauce
- Oregano
- Parsley
- Rosemary
- Thyme
- Cumin
- Salt
- Pepper
How to Prepare
Just as you can imagine, everything here is fairly easy. You want to start with browning you lamb (or cooking whatever meat you chose). Make sure to season the meat while its cooking, get that flavor inside each little crumble.

Dice and slice your onions and tomatoes, you can leave the onions in long strips or dice into small pieces. Same with your tomatoes, do whatever you prefer.

If you are choosing to make your own Tzatziki Sauce, now is a good time to do so. This way it is ready when you assemble. I cheated and bought a jar from the store, you can do whatever you like!
How To Assemble
Now that everything is prepped, start assembling your Gyro. Throwing everything together on top of the pita bread, meat, onions, tomatoes and topping off with the Tzatziki Sauce! The messier the better this Gyro is going to be! Overstuff it!

That’s It?
Yes!! That is really all there is too it! This was such a fun dinner to make and was super simple! I look forward to making this again, maybe even making my own sauce too! This doesn’t compare to that double decker red bus, but it sure was a close draw!
